CEPPOL
Centre of Practical Expertise in Pollution Response

CREATION

CEPPOL, the Centre of Practical Expertise in Pollution Response, inherited the Commission of Practical Studies in Pollution Response, former CEPPOL, created in the wake of the Amoco Cadiz disaster, by the French ministerial instruction dated 9 January 1979.

With thirty years of experience, its missions and status have evolved, moving from a consultancy role to that of an expert in pollution response at sea.

MISSIONS

The French Navy is in charge of response to pollution at sea. In order to fulfil its environmental responsibilities, it created CEPPOL. This centre of expertise, based in Brest, is responsible for ensuring response preparedness and providing expertise on response strategies for operations at sea.

GOVERNANCE

CEPPOL is a unit of the French Navy. It is under the authority of the commander of the Atlantic maritime area (CELCANT), is commissioned as the interdepartmental authority for pollution response within the Navy and is answerable to the Maritime Headquarters.
